Within the United States of America, in the year 2017, 74.9% of children suffered from neglect. 1,720 children have been reported dead due to neglect, with 71.8% of these children being under the age of 3. This is a devastating amount of child deaths that could all be prevented by following basic safety measures around the house, the car, or out in public.
Types of Child Safety Issues:
There are different aspects to consider when thinking bout child safety. Let’s face it, looking after a child is no walk in the park. One has to be so vigilant with everything going on in order to maintain the safety of the child/children in one’s care. Within the US, these different aspects are described below:
Child Safety Seats
For a long time now, it has been acceptable and appropriate to use seatbelts when installing Child Safety seats. This has now changed, however, and parents can use LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children).
Helmets
Teach your children ALWAYS to wear their helmets when riding a bicycle or using a skateboard or scooter. If your child’s helmet has been used to protect them once, buy a new one as the impact could cause damage to the helmet and may not work properly next time.
Household Hazards
Any baby will explore his/her surroundings-especially when they learn how to crawl. This is when they will begin to climb stairs and reach for medicine cabinets. Remove access to cleaning products, chemicals, and sharp kitchen utensils.
Safe Eating
Due to statistics taken, we are now aware that choking is the leading cause of death in children under 5. Make sure that children don’t have access to objects around them that they could put in their mouths and that they know how to eat safely.
Safe Sleeping
SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, has always been a cause for concern and relates to infants dying without apparent reason in their cribs. The best thing to implement in order to avoid this is to put your baby on his/her back in the crib.
Guns
Keep your gun unloaded and locked away from children if you own one. Moreover, if your child is shown a gun by a friend, teach them not to touch it and to inform an adult straight away.
Stranger Warnings
The danger is real with stranger danger. Teach your child to ask for permission from a trusted adult before speaking to any stranger. Teach your children the safety precautions they can take to avoid potential harm.
